Series of ten*

World Map is a good example of how the eyes and brain work together to make sense of “incomplete” information. This was initially an experiment to see how small I could make a complex image using stamps and for the image to still be recognisable. For example, South America is made up of only 30 stamps, and yet, in the context of the rest of the map, is unmistakable. This is also the first time I used a “checkerboard” technique to add some texture and character to the piece. Originally made in 1994, World Map is now available in a series of ten.

*Due to printing variation, postmarks and wear, each stamp is unique. These variations are used to “paint” the overall image. Consequently works in a series, whilst depicting the same overall image, are completely unique hand made pieces.
