Blackstar

I had been experimenting for some time with making five pointed stars from stamps. It is quite awkward to represent such a regular shape with any accuracy. Independently, I set myself a challenge to make a black on black image that would appear and disappear depending on the light conditions.

By combining these two ideas, I produced a work that has some similarities to the cover of David Bowie’s Blackstar album. There are at least 5 “black” stamps that have different characteristics, so many studies were needed to establish the best combination of stamps to have the desired effect. The images here are all of the same work, but with different exposures to mimic various lighting conditions.
